BAPTIZED and WELCOMED

Today our dear baby girl was baptized into the Catholic church.

When the big guy handed her to Fr. she squealed and screamed and cried. It broke my heart.
But once she was placed into the water, she settled almost immediately.
It was wonderful.

After mass when we were visiting with Fr., he said how he really appreciates it when babies cry as they're being handed over. It's as if the baby is in transition - coming from a 'different' place - from the comfort of dad's hands to the priest's hands - where the baby cries, almost symbolizing LIFE - like shouting to the kingdom,
"HERE I AM"
- and from there to the holy water, where they typically calm down.
Which is how it should be.
I like how he thinks.

It made me wonder, as a Catholic adult, how that would feel - in a big cold place, being completely naked and vulnerable and exposed - and suddenly finding myself calm and safe, bathing in holy water.

The baptismal font.
